What is BIM?

BIM or Building Information Modelling is a process for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle. One of the key outputs of this process is the Building Information Model, the digital description of every aspect of the built asset. This model draws on information assembled collaboratively and is updated at key stages of a project. Creating a digital Building Information Model enables those who interact with the building to optimize their actions, resulting in a greater whole life value for the asset.

What is the competition?

The competition focuses on the essential requirements for a successful career in BIM Modelling. Competitors will be tested on performance using CAD to produce and interact with 3D Project Information Models in a Common Data Environment.

24 students took part in the competition

  • College and University students came from
  • London South Bank Uni
  • New College Lanarkshire
  • Salford Uni
  • Middlesex Uni

Competitors will use Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Navisworks and Autodesk BIM360 software to complete the tasks.

Michael McGuire; LecturerBIM Lead at New College Lanarkshire and Chair of the Qualifications Support Team at SQA stated The WorldSkills BIM for Architectural Technology competition was a real test of abilities and the standards shown have been extremely high. All the students’ hard work and dedication has shone through and really shows they are at the forefront in terms of BIM education.

I would like to congratulate all the students and staff who took part in the competitions for their tremendous dedication and commitment to ensure their students are at the top of their game and of national and international standard.

BIM is very new to education, with some centers having just delivered BIM in their curriculum in the past year for the first time. The fact that WorldSkills UK already has a competition where educational establishments can judge their curriculum against a National standard is amazing! Well done to Steve Taylor, KnowledgePoint and Autodesk for making this happen.”

Autodesk are supporting WorldSkills UK competitions with free access to its software for use inside the classroom to UK Schools Colleges and Universities, and also at home for all Students and Teachers.

Philipp Müller, Program Manager Autodesk, EMEA commented With BIM being widely used in the industry, the new ISO Standard being released and the goals of Academia for Employability; it is really a fantastic time to have the Worldskills Competition being released.

It is really a great opportunity for students to showcase their skills and get connected to the Industry. We are proud to be working together with KnowledgePoint Connect on this fantastic Project.”
